Green with Envy?

18 Oct

I love my life…everything about it. I’m blessed to have such a wonderful family who would do anything for me. I have a warm, safe, comfortable home to live in (free of charge I might add…perks of living at home with the ‘rents while I’m in law school!). I have a vehicle to drive, a part time job as a fitness instructor (a life goal of mine, actually), and I am grateful to be in law school. I have nice things (okay, I’ll admit…I’m a shopaholic), and I get to do lots of fun things with family and friends most of the time…when I’m not doing law school work. Ha ha.

So why do I always look for something more? Why do I always see what someone else has and think, hmm, I really wish that were me? I think that envious feeling is an innate human quality (or maybe that isn’t the right word…?) but I think we all experience it. I find myself sometimes wishing I was driving that new BMW or buying an entire wardrobe of Michael Kors and  Marc Jacobs clothing (they’re my DREAM TEAM). I dislike that feeling so much, because sometimes it makes me feel like I’ll never get there, to that level. Of wealth. Of success. Of happiness. But wait…did I basically just say that money and labels equal happiness??? Unfortunately, I’ve found myself thinking that from time to time. Its pretty sad that I catch myself thinking that status equals happiness. I’ve been working on changing that view…by reminding myself of all the things that really make me happy. A weekend road trip with my family, walking on the beach at night, running outside on a cool day, relaxing on the couch with my boyfriend after a long day, going out with friends, photography, unwinding with yoga…the list goes on. Yes, some of those things do cost money, but the benefits of being a part of all of those things far outweighs the costs that are incurred to do them. I’m getting older, but I still have a lot to learn. I’d like to think that I look at life from a fairly mature standpoint nowadays…I know that when I was 17, 18, even 19, I had a difficult time seeing that there are greater things in life than mere status symbols like money and labels.

That was pretty deep, I know…haha. I have just been doing my best to always look at the joy in the small things in life, because they tend to mean the most. I’m still learning to appreciate a lot of those things, but one thing I do know is that the loving and caring nature of my family and friends is what makes my world spin around, and money can’t buy that :)

Things I Love About Fall…

29 Sep
  • The leaves as they change from green to all shades of orange, yellow, and red…
  • Nonfat Pumpkin Spice Lattes…I get the sense that PSLs are everyone’s favorite thing about Fall ;)
  • FOOTBALL…need I say more?!
  • Cool weather…which I’m currently still waiting for!
  • Pumpkins and other Fall decor
  • Going to the mountains to pick apples at my favorite orchard: Check it out!
  • Fall fashion…in LOVE with sweaters and boots and cute jackets and scarves. Ah.
  • The smell of peanuts being picked
  • Peanut Fest…if you don’t know what this is, you’re missing out ;)
  • Fall is also the unofficial start of race season for all of us runners out there! I am so excited…kicking it off with a Halloween 10k at the Oceanfront. Maybe I’ll actually dress up this time?!
  • Halloween
  • Thanksgiving…pretty much my favorite holiday…minus Christmas, of course :)
  • …And what’s Thanksgiving without: The MACY’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Truly, the best part about Fall is that I get to spend lots of quality time with family & friends and stay busy busy busy…until after Christmas, pretty much. If there’s one thing I thrive on, its being BUSY. haha. And as I just learned a few days ago when I was writing on my calendar, I have absolutely NO free weekends between now and after New Years! Crazy…but I like it! I hope everyone is finding their Fall to be very eventful…even though I’m sure we’re ALL busy, try to stop and take it all in…enjoy the moment ;)

Sweet Summertime

11 Aug

I fail at blogging during the summer, apparently. Haha. I actually have kept pretty busy the entire summer though, which I love…I always have the desire to be productive and keep moving! I’ve been working up a storm…lifeguarding most days of the week during this summer of 100-degree temps(!) and teaching Spinning at the gym a few times a week. Last week, my family was *finally* on vacation at the beach for the week. It. was. so. nice. We all did what we do best at the beach: relax, sit on the beach, drink, and take lots of bike rides (and take advantage of the gorgeous surroundings and run a lot, in my case!). Nights In Rodanthe house, anyone?

We had a great week at the beach…I’m really bummed that its back to reality this week! And law school orientation starts next Monday! Crazy how quickly this summer has gone by…maybe law school will go by quickly too?! haha

I think I’m going to join the ranks of society this week—I’m finally going to get a CrackBerry! ;) I think it’ll be really nice to be able to check my email at any time, especially since I seem to always use email constantly throughout the day. It’s nice to have internet access from your phone too…I’m clearly behind the times with my plain ol’ cell phone that is capable of…texting and taking photos, and not much else. haha. I’m thinking of this one:

Hopefully I’ll be technologically up-to-date by the end of this week! ;)

Where has the time gone?!

17 Jul

Well here I am again neglecting my blog…ha ha! July has turned out to be pretty busy, so I haven’t had time to sit down and write out my thoughts and catch up with where my life has taken me lately!

First of all, I just found out I was accepted to a law school nearby my home, so I will be commuting from home now instead of moving 5 hours away to go to law school in Charlotte! I’m a little excited, to be honest…I wasn’t sure about moving to a big city where I knew no one…and not to mention I love being home. After being 5 hours away from home at college the past few years, its nice to be back in my hometown :)

I also finally started teaching group fitness classes at the gym, and since I’m living at home now(!) I get to continue to work throughout the school year…I’ve never worked and juggled school at the same time, but hey, I know I’m going to work out anyways every day, so may as well get paid to do it! haha ;) I’m going to stay busy with this one though…I have lots of trainings to take to be an “official” Y employee and then I’ll have trainings that I have to keep up-to-date every year as well. I’m really excited though…this is what I’ve always wanted to do. Some people have dreamed of becoming an actress…or a doctor…or a musician…but I’ve dreamed of becoming a fitness instructor! haha…kidding…maybe…

I’ve been spending lots of time with family & friends…I love summer and everything it entails. Parties, fun, swimming, riding on the backroads listening to good music, random road trips and lots of fun. Ah. We haven’t even gotten to the good stuff yet…concerts, friends visiting, and vacation are coming up real soon…so excited! Here’s to hoping summer slows down just a bit so we can enjoy it as much as possible! ;)

What’s New

28 Jun

Wow its been a month since I’ve written on the blog! I’ve had quite a busy summer and blogging fell by the wayside…obviously. haha. A LOT has happened over the past month, so I’ll try to catch ya’ll up!

When I left off in May, I was bummed because I was getting ready to start working at my job for the 3rd straight summer and wouldn’t get to enjoy Memorial Weekend at the beach. However, right before the weekend, I quit my job there and took another lifeguarding job that paid more $$$ and is way more flexible! I went to the beach with the boy and his family and we met up with friends all weekend. It was so much fun and I realized I had been missing out the past few years when I had to work over the holiday weekend!

The following weekend, my parents had a graduation party for my graduation from college. My dad made homemade BBQ (he’s the best cook!) and we had a pig-picking…plus lots and lots of beer and shots (Peppermint Patties anyone?!), cornhole, Quarters (I still suck at that game…haha) and the company of family and friends. I got lots of $$$ and my parents gave me a Virginia Tech rocking chair from Cracker Barrel…don’t you love those famous chairs when you visit the ‘Barrel on a road trip?!

The week right after my grad party weekend, my mom and I went and stayed at the beach with my aunt and cousins and family friends. It was a girls week in a super-nice cottage in Corolla, NC…so much fun. There was lots of beach/pool/hot tub time, shopping, talking, movies, and in my case, running. I love running on the beach…wish I could do that every day!

The very next weekend after my grad party, my boyfriend’s sister got married! The countdown has been on since summer began and it was definitely a PARTY! The Rehearsal Dinner was so fun, and made everyone even more excited for the big day. I went to the church early with the wedding party and helped in any way I could before the wedding started. It was fun watching everyone get ready and have pictures taken! I will admit, it just added to my wedding envy…I’m counting down the days…haha. I already have so many ideas and I can’t wait to put them to use! And of course, no wedding is complete without an awesome reception afterwards…this one was no exception! The night started off great when the wedding party had to dance in to “Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night” and everyone had to do their own unique dance move. The groom showcased his famous “sprinkler” move…um, no one can do that quite like he can. haha. It really was a fun night, and I only had a ever-so-slight hangover the next day…ha.

In the meantime, while all of these fun things were going on, I had been working at the pool most days and getting a good tan! I also have been training at the gym to become a fitness instructor, so we had classes several days a week to attend. On Father’s Day weekend, I worked on Saturday and on Sunday, we just cooked out and played in the pool all day. I also got in an 8-miler on the treadmill….can’t do that too often…so boring! I’ve been running 40+ mile weeks, but pretty much on a treadmill either at home or at the gym, because its been extremely HOT here (100 degrees?!). Last week, I bought The Shred and No More Trouble Zones…I’ve heard really good things about them, so I figured why not? I’ve gotten my parents to do The Shred with me, which I’m really excited about! They really want to start working out, but have had a difficult time getting motivated…so this is really great for them! Plus 20 minutes of doing The Shred isn’t impossible, so its a good place to start. They’ve done it every single day with me, and I’m so proud of their dedication to it…well, that, and knowing our beach vacation is in a month is a really good motivator!!!

There is still so much to look forward to this summer (concerts, parties, beach, etc!) so I’m going to try and and enjoy it as best as I can :) I’m not really looking forward to going back to school so soon (especially starting law school…yikes!) but I know the next three years will fly by, so I’m not going to let it stress me out :) Well I hope everyone has had a fabulous summer so far, and hopefully it won’t be another month before I update this blog again! ;)

Graduation Recap!

18 May

I still can’t really believe I’m a college graduate! I keep looking at my diploma to remind myself…haha. It’s crazy to think I could go out today and find a “real” job if I wasn’t planning to attend law school in the Fall. Instead, I’ll be lounging by the pool as a lifeguard yet again, and possibly working at the gym (fingers crossed!) as a fitness instructor until I begin law school in August.

Friday was Graduation day #1 for me…we had a big commencement ceremony in the Lane that was for all 5,000 of us graduates. There were chances for storms to pass through, so we had our fingers crossed that it wouldn’t rain on us as we were sitting in the middle of the football field! I think God was looking out for us that night…the rain held off until about 10 minutes after the ceremony, and then it started pouring! Good timing ;)

Saturday morning I woke up and felt a little anxious, so I decided to get in one more Hot Yoga session before I left the ‘Burg for good. After that I got ready for Graduation day #2, which was when I received my diploma. I was so proud to be walking across that stage after only three years of college! I give lots of credit to my advisor, who helped me coordinate my course of study planner in order to graduate early. And of course I give credit to my parents, who supported me through college and paid the tuition! I know they’re glad I made it out in only three years…cut down on their expenses quite a bit! ;)

After I received my diploma on Saturday, my family, the boy, and I all went out for dinner to celebrate. We sat on the rooftop deck of one of my favorite downtown restaurants and drank mojitos until dusk, then I decided to take them to another local bar for drinks. We ended up having a great time…especially after pitchers of beer and rounds of shots for everyone…haha. However, the night left me a little teary-eyed, as I faced the realization that college really was over with. I may not have LOVED it there all the time, but I do have tons of memories there and I’ll miss the campus and the friends I’ve made over the past three years. I think I was really in disbelief Saturday night, because I was thinking about how I could go back and get another degree in another major…haha. I think one Bachelors degree is enough…now onto bigger and better things! ;)

On Sunday, we packed up my townhouse and made it out of town before 2pm…record packing and moving time! Luckily, I got to ride with the boy, so I got to relax and enjoy the ride home instead of having to drive. Sometimes its nice to be chauffeured around! I started unpacking boxes on Monday…but I didn’t get far before I realized I was in desperate need of cleaning out my bedroom and closets before adding MORE things to them. I have things from high school that I just need to get rid of…so I spent the rest of the day doing that. I still have a LOT of unpacking to do now, and a little more cleaning out and getting rid of old things. I have tons of clothes that I don’t wear anymore…some even still have the tags on them. I may take them to a place like Plato’s Closet where I can sell them, because some of the clothes are really nice and in great condition! And a little extra $$$ can’t hurt, either!

Today I spoke with the fitness coordinator at my local gym about working part-time along with my lifeguarding job, so if I am able to do that, I need to take the ACE exam asap. I should probably study and prepare a little bit for that even though I just took the prep class at school…want to make sure I know what I’m talking about so I don’t fail miserably! haha. I found out this afternoon that I won tickets to see Brad Paisley in concert on Friday night…I love his music and wanted to go the concert so badly, but never got around to buying tickets. So I’m thrilled to be going…perfect beginning to summertime! ;)

Back in action

26 Apr

After the craziness of last week, I finally feel (mostly) better. I think a lot of feeling better is being reassured that there’s nothing seriously wrong! I went to the doctor on Friday morning after another long sleepless night…I just couldn’t breathe Thursday night, especially when lying down. So I sat up on the couch all night, and actually wasn’t even tired. I finally got tired around 7am, and dozed off for a few minutes…unfortunately, I was going to the doctor at 8am so I didn’t get much sleep. I sat in the doctor’s office forever, and finally got called back. After they reviewed my symptoms and got the medical report from my Wednesday morning trip to the ER, my family doctor said he did not see how the ER doctor could have made such a diagnosis without doing a particular test (having to do with the lungs). Long story short, someone was wrong, and let’s just say it probably was not my family doctor….so my doctor suggested doing an Echocardiogram just to make sure it was nothing serious…he was almost certain it was just an inflamed chest wall. Which I still don’t know how that happened, but anyways….at least its not serious! So the Echocardiogram showed nothing wrong, which was a relief. I think I instantly felt a little better. So basically I was given extra-strength Aleve and that’s about it. But I really am feeling better, so I’m glad :)

I took it easy over the weekend. Friday, after my long day of doctor’s appointments, I was exhausted from not getting sleep the night before. I fell asleep on the couch for about 4 hours, then after dinner fell asleep again. And slept really good that night. So I felt pretty awesome Saturday morning….haha. Then, Saturday was verrrry busy, so I didn’t have time to miss running….because yes, I’ve missed my workouts A LOT. I ended up buying my graduation dress Saturday night plus some gorgeous shoes ;)

Sunday, after running errands with my mom and working on projects for classes, I begged my mom to let me run…ha ha ha. She didn’t care as long as I felt like it…I should’ve known that. The only person who didn’t want me to run was the boy…I think he was terrified I was going to feel bad again. But running actually felt good, and I totally ran at my normal pace. It was nice to break a sweat for the first time in a few days!

I drove back to the ‘Burg today for my last FULL week of classes…we have 3 days next week, too, but those are filled with last-minute exams that my professors crammed in the schedule, so it seems like next week will be my “finals” week. Ha. Its nice to know that college is almost over…I didn’t even dread the 5-hour drive back to school today…because I know its almost over and I’ll be out of here soon ;)

So I’m about to go attempt a Spinning class at my gym near campus…I tried it once before and felt like it was not a good workout at all, but I’m giving it another shot. Plus I don’t need to overexert myself anyways…trying to ease back into my workouts without making myself worse!
