Goals for 2011

1 Jan

Like I said before…I am not much of a “resolution” maker. If there is something I want to do or to have, I start working toward it right away. Why wait for the new year when you can go ahead and start working toward achieving your goals? :) However, I do have a few goals I’d like to accomplish in 2011. There are a lot of things I think about as the days go by, so I don’t have every goal for this new year already decided!

1. Travel to Europe, hopefully for the summer – This has been weighing on my mind for a while now, and well, there’s no time like the present! It would make much better sense to travel throughout Europe while I’m still in law school and still have a “summer break” and won’t have a job tying me down. Plus, at 21 (almost 22!) I feel like I’m at a perfect age to do this…old enough, mature enough, yet young enough to have lots of fun and not hold back from anything! :)

2. Run a Marathon…already accepted to ING NYC 2011 – I think this is the year I want to train for a marathon, but I also think that might depend on my travel plans! If I’m in Europe for the summer, I don’t think training for NYC will be very feasible…unless I find a running partner while I’m there ;)

3. Train for a sub-1:50 Half Marathon – I have confidence in myself that I can do this…as long as I train the way I should! I ran my last half in 1:55, and I have been running consistently faster since then, so I don’t think this goal will be too difficult to achieve :)

4. Put together cute outfits from my closet and stop shopping all the time! – A few weeks ago, I was feeling inspired, and put together some really cute outfits from clothes that I already own. I just need to get better at doing this regularly instead of being in constant “shopping mode” (i.e. always browsing online or at the mall and not restraining from buying!)

5. Get back to twice-weekly strength training – I had been doing really good with this…until I started law school. haha. My time got to be so limited that in addition to my daily running, I only had time to strength train once a week. My schedule for the Spring semester gives me a little more time in the day, so I hope to get back to 2x a week strength workouts!

6. Hot Yoga once a week – This might be a tough one to find the time for with my school schedule, but I had been doing 1x week Hot Yoga last Spring and it was GREAT. Such a good complement to running 35+ miles a week!

7. Write more often – I love blogging, but I found that I didn’t have a lot of time to devote to it this past semester. When I started posting much more frequently in December, I really enjoyed the creative outlet that it provided! Eventually, my goal is to write a novel…just need to find that place to begin!

8. Take more pictures – I LOVE photography. When I’m feeling inspired, I can take some really “artsy” pictures! One, I would like to buy a better quality camera (especially if I do travel this summer!), and two, I would like to learn more about the art surrounding photography.

9. Go out more – Hey, you only live once…may as well have as much fun as possible! This is something I always struggle with…balancing school and a social life, especially since I’ve been in law school. But the truth is, if I used my time more wisely throughout the day, I could get everything done and still have time for some more fun!

10. Read more – And I don’t mean textbooks! I feel like all of my time is consumed reading for classes, but if I could just put down the textbooks to read a book for pure enjoyment once a week, that would be good enough for me!

What are your “goals” for the new year? Do you like to make resolutions and can you keep them?

A good kind of pain

26 Mar

Oh the irony…how is pain ever good? Well the kind of pain that is muscle soreness never seems to be a bad thing! Let’s see:

Sunday–Half Marathon

Monday–rest day + yoga to stretch after the Half

Tuesday–6 mile interval run

Wednesday–5 mile hill run outside…in perfect weather :)

Thursday–impromptu Bootcamp workout in Personal Training class + one hour elliptical intervals…serious workout day

Friday–BodyPump + super-speedy 5k + fitness assessment project work (aka death–wayyy too many pushups/situps)

…all of that has left me incredibly sore tonight. In a good way of course :)

I’ve had a great workout week even after running a half marathon on Sunday. It’s amazing how being so active makes recovery time so quick! Going out for a 13.1 mile run is just a workout for the books nowadays…so maybe I should look into a new challenge…a marathon? I think so ;) I am registered for the NYC Marathon lottery…and I think April 7th is the announcement day. We shall see! If I don’t get to run NYC, I’m eyeing the OBX Marathon…close to my home, plus its my favorite, favorite place in the entire world. I practically grew up there…so it would be a super-fun marathon :) Both of these are in November…which means I would be doing my longest runs during the first two months of law school…scary! I know I’m going to be busy with school…but I never sacrifice a good workout…and I never will. Law school is not going to change that…haha. I’m pretty stubborn ;)

I know there’s sooo much I need to be doing right now but quite honestly I’m being lazy and enjoying it…haha. I’ve had an extremely busy week and the rest of my time in college is going to be busybusybusy, so I’m laying low tonight. Graduation in 48 days! ;)

Newfound Optimism

23 Mar

I think my long weekend at home really helped me de-stress! I was sooo overwhelmed last Thursday when I decided to skip classes and drive home earlier than planned. It turns out that I didn’t really miss anything in class and I got almost 8 pages written on one of my papers over the weekend…in addition to: laying out and getting a tan 2 days in a row, spending time with the fam & the boy, and running a wonderful half marathon on Sunday, my best yet! ;) I have felt sooo great ever since the half…not sore or anything. I did yoga yesterday just to stretch, and today I ran 6 miles of intervals! I’m feeling so good…looks like a great time to start marathon training! ha ha

I drove back to school Monday morning and made it back just in time to make a stop at Starbucks (caffeine was necessary), find a place to park, and walk to class. After running a few errands, I finally made it back to the house and unpacked (I always bring WAY too much stuff!), and wrote a paper that was due today…yeah, nothing like waiting ’til the last minute! I still have to finish the paper I worked on at home…I need about 2 more pages…and then write another paper. Both are due Thursday. Yikes. Did I mention I have an exam tomorrow? Yeah, I should probably go study… ;)

I’ll leave you with a picture of an adorable gift I got in the mail today…Kirby over at GoodGals, Inc sent me a “Red” themed gift basket…because I won her Bachelor-themed contest! I correctly guessed the number of times that the word Jake would be said on the finale…don’t ask me HOW I managed to do that, but I did! Thanks, Kirby…I love the gift basket…so cute!

Sorry the crappy phone picture doesn’t do it any justice…haha

Tears of Happiness

21 Mar

I just got home from running the Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA…and I have never been happier. I set out with a goal: to finish in less than 2 hours…and I finished in 1:55! I wasn’t sure I could keep my pace up for the whole race, but I kept my pace below a nine-minute mile the entire race. I trained hard for this race and I’m so proud that I accomplished my goal! Last year at this very same event, I was running my very first half marathon after dealing with an IT band problem for the 3 months before the race and only having trained up to a 7-mile run. Last year, my finish time was 2:09, which I was still very proud of, especially since I was injured and hadn’t trained properly. But PR’ing by 14 minutes today had me in tears while running towards the finish line…it was an amazing feeling, and I think this is a runner’s high that is going to last a few days ;)

A little too much

19 Mar

So in the midst of a crazy busy three weeks, one of my roommates convinced me to go out for St. Patty’s Day. Part of me reallllly wanted to (just turned 21…first AND last St. Patty’s Day in college…yeah) but part of me knew I should stay in and get some work done. Ha ha…let’s just say, you only live once—I went out ;) I honestly haven’t been much of a partier since freshman year of college…and I don’t really miss it. But I wanted to have this experience…plus I really wanted to finally go bar-hopping since I didn’t on my birthday! We got an early-ish start around 8:30 and 4 of us split a pitcher of Guinness…yikes, not my favorite. Then a friend bought us a round of Lemon Drops for my 21st…they were pretty good actually. We ended up at another bar doing Irish Car Bombs…pretty good but you have to chug it or it curdles because of the Bailey’s! After dropping off a friend at another bar (we didn’t drink anything there), we went back to bar #2 and I was forced to take a tequila shot…which I actually like tequila, so NBD…haha. I should mention that I had yet to buy my own drink…perks of being a birthday girl ;) I probably should’ve stopped at that point (it was only like 10pm…haha) but nooo. Next up, a Blue Moon…one of my favorites actually. And followed that with a Coors Light. Then moved on to bar #3, and I was ready to go home at that point! We get our hands stamped and go upstairs and meet up with friends…then my roommate disappears. Yeah, she left. So I’m stuck with no way to get home and all I wanted to do was SLEEP. Its almost midnight at this point. I asked a mutual friend if he knew how I could get home…he said he could definitely get us a ride around 12:30 or 1. Noooo, I was way too tired at that point. Knowing the buses stop running at midnight, I started walking downstairs…and he followed me and offered to drive me home. But we had to walk over a mile to his apartment to get his car. Sweet. Did I mention I’m wearing 5″ heels??? Fortunately(?) the alcohol numbed my feet so I didn’t feel the pain of my very cute heels. It was all kind of a blur, but it seemed like we made it back to his apartment in record time. I don’t remember what was said during that walk…hopefully nothing embarrassing. Oh well. So I got a ride back and immediately collapsed in bed. Good thing I set my alarm before I even started drinking! I woke up after sleeping 7 hours and felt like I had been hit by a Mack truck. Yeah…and I had to go to Personal Training class. Always a good thing to do, get plastered and go to a class that promotes health and well-being. Let’s just say it won’t happen again. I honestly don’t enjoy drinking a lot and I’m definitely not going out on a weeknight again. Not worth it! I’ll stick to my “early to bed, early to rise” mantra and catch up on Keeping With The Kardashians while doing schoolwork. It’s much more worthwhile in the long run ;)

I made another “bad” life choice (or good life choice…in my opinion) by choosing to skip classes and drive home yesterday instead of waiting until tonight. It was totally worth it. This is Shamrock Sportsfest weekend…the half marathon is on Sundayyyy ;) I feel SO much more prepared than I did last year and I’m looking forward to it. Ahh, right now I’m living the life: laying in the yard, tanning and catching up on blogs. Classes, what classes? ;)

Weekend Recap

15 Mar

Spring Break sure did make me slack on blog posting! Here’s a “Weekend Recap” for the second weekend in a row…so unlike me!

Saturday was my 21st, which if you read my blog, was fairly obvious. Ha ha…I’ve only mentioned it 2843243 times! The weather was gorgeous on Saturday, so I went out for a 5-mile run in the sunshine. I ran a LOT more at home than I do at school…its just better for running where I live. I love having access to all of the back country roads where there is hardly any traffic! After my run, I did some ab work and then started getting ready to go out for my birthday dinner. We left the house in plenty of time to get there, and even had time to stop by The Fresh Market so I could pick up some Spring Blend coffee…almost out of Starbucks House Blend and I wanted to try something new! We drove over to The Melting Pot for our 7pm reservation…and it didn’t disappoint, of course ;) I have been there about 4 times, my parents have been twice, and this was the boy’s first experience there. I love love love it…this is the second birthday I’ve celebrated there! We did a 4-course meal: two kinds of cheese fondue, salads, meat entrees, and a white/dark chocolate swirled dessert fondue. I was stuffed after the salad!!! I didn’t eat all of the meat….gave it to my dad and boyfriend. They’ll eat anything…haha. It was wayyy too much food…I would recommend splitting the meat entree…or just getting cheese + chocolate fondue and skipping the meat altogether! After dinner, the manager stopped by and offered to make me a free drink for my 21st…so I ordered the Strawberry Basil Lemonade which had Smirnoff Strawberry Twist vodka, lemonade, strawberries, and basil leaves. It was so good…and you could barely taste the alcohol, so that could be dangerous. ha ha. We attempted to go bar-hopping afterwards, but to be honest, the city we were in doesn’t have a lot of selection. We went to an English pub, but it had literally just opened for business and was way too crowded. So we went to a really awesome Irish pub that’s been around forever…but they weren’t allowing unders at all, so the boy couldn’t get in. He’s a youngin’ compared to me I guess. haha.  Sooo we ended up at Cheddars, which is like a chain restaurant/bar…not exactly where I had planned to go, but it turned out fine. The waiter was excellent and hilarious, and he talked everyone (except my boyfriend) into ordering drinks. I got my mojito! It was actually really good, but this particular one was verrrry strong. I thought better of having another of those, so I ended up being talked into a 24 oz. Coors Light. For some reason, it tasted soooo much better now that I’m “legal”…haha I’m not sure that even makes sense! But now, the possibilities are endless…I’m not even much of a drinker…seriously…but I had the urge to buy a bottle of wine when I stopped at the grocery store tonight, just because I can. I didn’t buy it though…guess I’m not that exciting!

After having drinks, I literally fell asleep in the car on the way home. I just can’t hang anymore. haha. Freshman year of college I could stay out and drink until 3am…okay, that isn’t something I should be proud of…but you get my point ;) Once I got home, all I wanted to do was sleep (did I mention it was almost 1am at this point?!)…I even passed up Funfetti Birthday cake (my fave!) that my mom made healthy just for me with egg whites + applesauce! Don’t worry, I had cake for lunch yesterday to make up for it.

I had planned to drive back to school yesterday, but eh, that didn’t happen after Saturday night. I was sooo tired so I decided to drive back on Monday. So I ended up going to my gym for Spin class + strength training. It was a much-needed detoxifier….I always feel better once I sweat out the alcohol. haha. It was nice to spend another night at home with the fam & the boy. I really dread going back to school, but only 2 more months to go! Oh and I’ll be driving home again in 4 days for the Shamrock Half Marathon on Sunday…soooo I have that to look forward to this week :) Minus all the work I have to do, I mean…

Adding the Miles

10 Mar

So I wanted to get in a double digit run sometime this week over Spring Break, but I was slowly running out of time to squeeze one in! Since I’ll be gone Thursday & Friday to Charlotte, NC to visit a law school, that left me with today and Saturday…and Saturday is my 21st birthday! I had no intentions going into my run…the weather was sooo perfect, 70 degrees and no wind…and I just wanted to enjoy it. But as I started running, I felt really good and decided I would aim for a double digit run. Its a challenge to measure the exact distance since my Nike+ chip isn’t working (and its a brand new replacement!), so I guesstimated most of the time. I have measured out 7 miles out and back, so I just ran farther and hoped it would add enough mileage! Well, I checked mapmyrun.com when I got back and I actually did 11 miles! Unfortunately, today’s run wasn’t as lovely as my eleven-miler two weeks ago. But I got in the miles, so that’s all that matters. I probably won’t do another double-digit run before the half marathon on March 21st…I’ll keep my runs under 8 miles most likely.

I’ve been helping cook dinner since I’ve been home this week, and tonight I’m actually getting my parents to eat tofu. My mom doesn’t mind it, but I don’t think my dad is a huge fan of it…haha. I made healthy Spinach-Tofu Lasagna, so I doubt he will even know there’s tofu in it! ;) I still need to pack for the trip to Charlotte, because we’re leaving early tomorrow…gotta get in all the shopping time I can while I’m there! Haha, of course I would think of shopping…even though that’s obviously not the reason we’re making the trip there. I was accepted at the law school in Charlotte, and they do tours and info sessions on Fridays only, so this was the only time I am able to go. I know for a fact that I love Charlotte…so hopefully I’ll like the law school as well!

Well I guess I better start packing…you can never take too many clothes when you travel! ;)

Fail.

27 Feb

I had big plans for a Hot Yoga class this morning. I went to bed relatively early and made myself get out of bed at 8:50am to get ready and drive to the studio. I looked out the window…surprise, surprise–there was snow on the ground. If you know me, you know that I am NOT going to drive in snow, especially since my townhouse is kind of at the top of a hill and I’m terrified of my car sliding around. I meant SUV…with 4-wheel drive. Ha ha yes I’m just afraid for no reason, I admit it. But anyways, I had to skip Hot Yoga…I was really looking forward to it after hitting the gym hard this week. I did Body Pump twice, lots of running, and lots of elliptical intervals throughout the week. So that was a little disappointing, but I might go tomorrow afternoon…its just such a good feeling after 90 minutes of sweating out toxins and getting some good stretching in. Does anyone else love Hot Yoga as much as I do?!

I had plans for today to be my “rest” day, only doing Hot Yoga, and then running 10 miles tomorrow. But since that clearly didn’t happen, I ran 5 miles on the treadmill today and tackled a few hills/intervals…I’m thinking of running another 5 tomorrow and then doing Hot Yoga in the afternoon. I know it isn’t going to be 10 miles all at once, but it still accomplishes the basic goal of running 10 miles this weekend + Hot Yoga. So I’ll go with it I guess :) I can’t wait until next week, when I get to go to my hometown gym (YMCA) alllll week! I miss the fab Spinning classes and the best Ab classes I’ve ever been to…and all of the instructors are awesome! Its the little things in life that make me happy ;) I also will probably get in a 12 or 13 mile run while I’m home…just as prep for my Half on March 21st. I’ve maintained my endurance and have been running 10-12 mile runs regularly, so I’m not really building up. I have been working on more intervals/high intensity training and I think I’ll definitely run the Half in less time this year than I did last year. We shall see I guess ;)

Well I’m going to relax & enjoy the rest of the day…I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! :)

Running Adventure

21 Feb

Wow, today has been GORGEOUS! Perfect 60 degree weather, a little breeze, and lots of sunshine. And the snow is melting…pretty quickly, too! I’ve been looking at the weather forecast all week, and I had my eye on today for a long outdoor run. However, I was talking a 6 or 7 mile “long run.” So I left the townhouse without planning out a running route…I just wanted to enjoy it. I took a few side streets into neighborhoods, and then crossed over and ran on a trail that circles a neighborhood (I think its a 5k trail?). I then proceeded to run around the town and then along the perimeter of my university campus…which is a HUGE campus by the way. I then ran down Main Street through town and back up heading towards my townhouse. Before I knew it, an hour and 40 minutes had passed and I had ran 11 miles! (*9:05 pace). Wow, that was totally unplanned…but the weather was just so perfect and I didn’t get tired or bored, so it kept me going the whole time. Well…I hadn’t planned on it being a training run for my half, but it turned out to be one anyways! :)

Now that I’ve gotten a great workout in, I guess I’ll relax a little and do some studying for a Nutrition exam I have on Wednesday! Ah, its days like today that give me hope…Spring is just around the corner! ;) Happy Sunday!

Sometimes You Get What You Want :)

10 Feb

So I woke up to howling winds this morning, but I didn’t think too much of it. Then I heard that the temperature was 14 degrees with a wind chill of 1 degree. Yikes! Walking out the door to catch the bus, I knew it was going to be a miserable day, weather-wise. With 50-60 MPH winds (which are still happening…its sooo loud and scary!) and about 2 feet of snow on the ground, there were some massive snow drifts building plus snow flying through the air. It was so bad that all of the hard work of clearing the roads and sidewalks was for no good. There was 3” of snow covering the sidewalk to the bus stop, and the main road in town was covered in snow and ice. I saw so many cars sliding and “fish-tailing” down the road…glad I wasn’t driving! Although it would be nice to be able to drive again…so tired of being snowed in!

Once I finally got back to the house, I knew I absolutely did not want to go back outside again…so I did a Kathy Smith Strength Training video. Its one of my favorites, actually, and its a really good workout! I start sweating within 5 minutes of starting…its that good ;) I’ve been upping my running mileage lately, so I figured it would be a nice break to do some strength/toning workouts.

Last year, I ran the Shamrock Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA for the first time, and absolutely loved it. For the previous three years (during high school/freshman in college), I participated in the 8k run that they have…but I was ready to challenge myself. So I started training for the half…and got injured. I was sooo mad and frustrated that I couldn’t even run a mile without my leg hurting. I was the “elliptical queen” for about 2.5 months because I couldn’t run, but I wanted to keep my endurance up. A few weeks before the half, my leg was feeling pretty good, so I went out and did an 8-mile run. I then proceeded to run the half two weeks later, having only one “long” run (8m) under my belt! Well, it was definitely a challenge, but I ended up doing well. Especially for not being able to have trained properly! Flash forward to Fall 2009, and I had dreams of running the Shamrock Marathon this Spring (March 2010). I kept up with my training runs through mid-December, and then I started to have some leg/knee pain, and I had to back off. I was disappointed, but I still managed to do some long-distance runs. Once I got back to school, though, I was unable to get in my 16, 18, 20+ mile runs because of the snowy weather (and class schedules). So I disappointingly changed my plans and am pushing my marathon training back a few months. In the meantime, I wanted to run the Shamrock HALF again, to improve my time. Plus I can run 13.1 miles now easily…and its much more enjoyable :) The problem–the half-marathon always sells out in early December. So I went on Craigslist and placed an ad for a Half-marathon race bib….and less than 24 hours later, a girl emailed me and offered to sell hers. She has a stress fracture and is unable to participate. I feel sorry for her…I know how it feels to be injured! But now I get to run the half…under someone else’s name. haha can’t wait!

I’m still thinking about some more races this year…I like having something to train for. It makes long-distance running that much more fun :) So far I have a February race (VIFL 14k) and a March race (Shamrock Half)…and did I mention this is the first year I can partake in the free Yuengling beer at the end of the Shamrock?! So excited :)
