Fitness&Nutrition-filled weekend!

28 Mar

Ahhh I think last week was the busiest week I’ve had (in a while, at least). Three term papers (yeah, I wondered how they could be term papers…the semester isn’t over yet!) kept me super busy all last week, which was  not fun. I took Thursday and Friday “off” from doing schoolwork to recuperate for the rest of the semester…still lots of work to do, but its coming together pretty well now.

Yesterday, I helped Relay for Life raise money at a Hot Yoga class at the local yoga studio…and I even had time to take the class too :) I LOVE Hot Yoga, which I’m sure you already knew if you read my blog…ha ha. I think we raised a pretty good amount for Relay, and there were LOTS of people that had never done Hot Yoga before, so maybe the studio will have lots of new yogis now ;) When I got back to the townhouse, I knew that I had a hot date with my Nutrition project…yes. I started compiling it and doing calculations around 6pm, and I didn’t finish working on it until almost 11pm! But the important thing is, its done, and now I can focus on other work I need to get done!

I actually feel productive this weekend…I took an online quiz this morning, and after a long run, I have to go to a Personal Training practice sesh (we have to go to 3 events/practices to get credit for class). So all in all, this weekend has been FULL of fitness and nutrition…and I love it. Maybe I should rethink my career path…haha. Fitness>lawyer-ing. However, the $$$ is probably a LOT less! And with my shopping obsession, maybe I should stick with going to law school and (hopefully) making big bucks……

Icy Tuesday

2 Feb

Another day, more snow. That is the story of my life right now around here…I woke up this morning to some serious snow falling, and about 1/2 an inch had already fallen overnight. It made for a really yucky morning! I slid on the way to the bus stop and almost turned around and said screw classes (ha ha), but I couldn’t do it. I don’t like to miss class. I guess that’s the overachiever/perfectionist in me. Plus, I had my Personal Training class this morning and I totally didn’t want to miss that ;) Today was the first day we had to wear workout clothes (perfect messy, snowy day for it too!) and we did body composition testing and talked about preliminary client evaluations. It was interesting…a little awkward getting touchy feel-y with random people…and especially random guys. Ha ha. At least he was cute?!

After two more classes following my PT class, I have a really big break between classes. I get out of class at 1:45 and don’t go to my last class until 3:30! I usually grab coffee and find a good place to read for classes…its pretty much the only time I can commit myself to reading for classes! However, today I was not feeling it…so I went to the gym instead. I already had my workout clothes on…so it was an easy decision! I did five miles on the treadmill WITHOUT my iPod (that’s a shocker!)…it felt good! I haven’t had many solid long-er runs lately because it hasn’t been feasible to run outside and I don’t like the treadmill that much, so I usually find more exciting ways to work out…haha. I love how working out makes me feel, but it was really nice to get my workout out of the way so I could just relax and cook dinner when I got back from classes. I made a chicken stir-fry and “fried” rice (brown rice with veggies and egg whites)…it was really good! I’m getting a little more creative rather than just spinach salad with veggies & a lean turkey burger every night! ;)

I think I have some work I need to do…oops. I’ve been sucked into watching Sweet Home Alabama, for the five-thousandth time probably. I just LOVE that movie :)

Variety is the Spice of Life

27 Jan

Because I don’t want to get in a workout rut, I decided I would try something different today. I did BodyStep, which is the Les Mills take on Step Aerobics. The Les Mills program is the same one behind the BodyPump workout I did on Monday. I hadn’t done a Step class in almost a year actually! It was fairly challenging, but I wouldn’t say it was too tough of a workout. I did a fast mile & a half-mile walk on 10% incline before the class, so I think altogether it was a decent workout. Its just nice to have some variety and work out different parts of my body throughout the week!

Afterward, I made a grocery store stop to pick up some veggies, hummus, and cereal. I spend a lot of money on groceries…I think its because I always buy healthy foods, some organic…plus Greek Yogurt is sooo expensive around here! But I love it too much to not buy any :) What’s bad is that I have a mealplan on my college campus, and there are lots of good places to eat…I’m just picky and I prefer to cook healthy meals for myself. I mostly use my mealplan $$$ on coffee between classes and the occasional cup of soup from ABP for lunch. Oh well. I wanted to stock up on all of my favorite healthy foods because the weathermen are calling for a snowstorm this weekend…anywhere from 6″ up…and since anything over an inch is going to keep me from driving out, I though it was good to keep the kitchen stocked for the weekend! This weather is getting in the way of my running though…I want Sundays to be my designated long run day, but it looks like this is the second weekend of that NOT happening! I might have to hit the clubhouse treadmill again this weekend…

25 Jan

I was able to Force Add into the Personal Training class, so by the time May rolls around, I will be official ;) I just hope I can get a job at a gym this summer! All of my other classes are going well, and I love love love my Foods & Nutrition class! I think that even though I have six classes, I am not going to be too busy. I’ll still have time for my long workouts and what’s even more fun is I get to work out and get college credit! We also get to train clients and create a fitness plan for someone, so that should be interesting!

Tonight was the introduction of Les Mill’s BodyPump to my college…some of the group fitness instructors got certified to teach it this past Fall, and now they will be having regular BodyPump classes on the group exercise schedule! After I ran a fast mile, I went in very optimistic and confident that it would be fairly “easy” for me. HA HA. Was I ever wrong! It was probably one of the hardest workouts I’ve done…and let me tell you, free weights kick your butt in a different way than weight machines do! I feel soooooo…exhausted right now….but in a GOOD way :) I really would like to do that workout once or twice a week…I know I would see results almost immediately! So anyways, that was my night…now I need to make a (really late) dinner and read for classes so I can get some sleep before my PT class in the morning!

A free T-Shirt & a Mini Luna Bar…just for showing up!

Dreary Sunday

24 Jan

I had planned for today to be my long run for the week…until I woke up to a rainy day. I thought I might could get out and run before the heavy rain moved in, but no such luck! As soon as I walked out the door, it started pouring. So I walked directly to the clubhouse gym to run on the treadmill. I knew going in that there was no way I was going to do double-digit mileage on the treadmill…I get soooo bored! So I compromised and ran a fast 5k, walked a mile on 10% incline, and then did a half-hour on the elliptical on the highest level…still a really good workout, even without putting in the miles. I guess I’ll go on a long run one afternoon at the beginning of this week…Tuesday might be good since I get out of class by 1:45pm. Ah this rain/ice/snow/dreary weather really dampers my mood! I need some sunshine…and warm weather, maybe? ;)

So I have gotten a lot done over this weekend, and today I finished up returning and buying textbooks…hopefully I’ve gotten everything I need by now! Last night I was looking at assignments for my Health & Nutrition class that I just registered for, and I am actually really, really excited for this class! I even did a few of the Extra Credit assignments already, because I thought they were interesting! I read the assigned readings from our text this morning and almost couldn’t stop reading. Again…I should’ve been a dietician! ha ha :)

I’m a big fan of Panera Bread…whenever my mom and I go shopping or we’re near a Panera, we make sure we have lunch there. I just love their soups and salads…and fresh coffee to go with it! There happens to be two Paneras near my college, one is right off campus and the other is about 6 miles away. I’ve been craving it since I’ve been back at school, but I’ve resisted going because it would probably become a habit! Anyways, there happens to be an Au Bon Pain on my college campus, which is very similar to Panera. ABP is even included on our mealplans, so I went there today instead of giving in to my Panera addiction! I got Low-Fat French Onion Soup (it didn’t have bread and cheese on it) and a Mediterranean Grilled Chicken Salad….and it was surprisingly really good! Since I have a whole Commuter Student Meal-Plan to use by the end of the semester, maybe I’ll start going to ABP more often. I have been cooking at the townhouse a lot, so I haven’t really eaten on campus until today. But I have always had a problem spending all of my mealplan money, so maybe I should (not?) cook so much. I think most people like the convenience of having a meal-plan, but I would honestly rather cook. Does anyone else prefer cooking over having someone prepare food for you?

22 Jan

This past Fall semester was glorious. Why? Well for one, I was commuting to ODU from home, and I lived with my family & saw my boyfriend every day…I was spoiled. But the other reason was, I took only Political Science classes (which is my major). No French classes, no other electives, nothing. Just PSCI. It was fab! I enjoyed going to class every day, and I was always excited to learn new things. Fast forward to Spring 2010…the present…and I have been feeling bummed since classes began on Tuesday. In order to complete the minor that I chose (French), I still have to complete two 3000-level French classes. The thing is, I’ve really lost the desire to take French anymore. For a while now, I’ve dreaded going to any French class (I’ve been taking French since middle school, over 7 years) and I’m just always swamped with work in my French classes. Which means I don’t get to enjoy my other classes and I feel constantly stressed! So I have been thinking about what I REALLY want, especially since its my last semester of college…and I decided I would drop my minor and just take a few classes that genuinely interest me. So I signed up for a Food & Nutrition class…which I went to today for the first time, and it is right up my alley! I should’ve gone to school to be a nutritionist/dietician! But I love my Poli Sci as well ;) I also am force-adding (it’s overfilled!) a Personal Training/Fitness Instructor course which will prepare me for the ACE examination…which is what I’ve wanted to do for so long now. I want to work in a gym (during the summer, while in law school, etc.) and possibly teach group exercise classes, spinning, etc. So I finally feel happy about this semester, for the most part. I have confirmed that I have met graduation requirements, so I can breathe a little more…and now I have 3 Poli Sci courses, 2 Health/Fitness courses, and 1 English course focusing on…Harry Potter…haha…yes it’s an easy and fun class :) So that relieves a substantial amount of stress for me, and I can focus on the things I love most…Politics, Health & Fitness, and reading! ;)

Speaking of de-stressing, I am going to a 90-minute hot yoga class tomorrow…my college town just got a Hot Yoga studio which is really exciting. I had so much fun when I went to a class around home a few weekends ago. I also got to drive out today (thankfully the ice is mostly melted!) and I joined a gym that’s literally a mile or so from my townhouse, and right near campus. The on-campus gym is just WAY too crowded, and now with living off campus, its a terrible time trying to find a place to park. So I figured it would be worth my while to check out a different gym! I did 45 min. of cardio/strength training and then a Spin class. It was so-so…I much prefer my gym at home, but this will have to do for a few months!

I love to cook, but I’m actually a much better baker than anything. I tend to stray away from cooking meats for fear of under-cooking/over-cooking/handling raw meat. But I can make really good lean turkey burgers, and I actually prefer handling ground turkey rather than chicken. But I went to the grocery store after I left the gym, and there was boneless, skinless chicken breasts on sale…and I actually bought two packs! I even went back to the townhouse and cut up the chicken and made a stir-fry with a little EVOO and some spices. It was really great…I’m getting the hang of cooking for myself! I also had some raw carrot chips and mushrooms with some plain hummus…delish!

So I think I just wrote a novel…oops! That’s probably more than anyone wanted to read, so I’ll go back to watching 50 First Dates and finishing my glass of wine ;)

Three Things Thursday

21 Jan

1. We’ve been getting freezing rain since I woke up this morning at 7:45…and it actually got bad enough for the university to cancel afternoon classes. That’s took me by surprise, since they NEVER, EVER cancel classes here! Out here in the mountains, everyone is just used to winter weather. Unfortunately, this means I won’t be driving out to register at a new gym this afternoon. Guess I’ll be using the tiny gym in the clubhouse once again!

2. I am about to do something I’ve never done before…take 21 credit hours! I’ve gotten by on 15 credit hours per semester since freshman year of college, but I have to take at least 18 to graduate in May, and the extra 3 just make me feel more comfortable about having enough credits. Plus its a Food & Nutrition class, which, in retrospect, is what I should have majored in!

3. So I’m STILL sore from an Advanced Pilates class I took Tuesday! Yikes…at least that was a good workout!
