Snowww :)

26 Dec

Well as it turns out, we got our “White Christmas” after all. And it continued all day today…we have around 13″ of snow in our yard! For this area, that is a LOT. And I can only remember probably one other snowfall this big since I’ve been alive…so that means it probably won’t happen again anytime soon! haha

So much snow!

Chloe was a little too small for all the snow ;)

16. Things To Do On A Snowday

16 Dec

Snow days are fun, right? Well…not when you drive 50 minutes to class to take a 45 minute exam, and then sit in traffic for 2 hours. BUT that’s another story for another day :) Ideally, snow days should be filled with movies, fun, hot chocolate, and playing in the snow…here are some suggestions:

1. Watch Christmas movies – Isn’t is great when it snows so close to Christmas? I LOVE it :)

2. Make Hot Chocolate or Coffee – Add a candy cane or some holiday marshmallows for a festive drink!

3. Play Games

4. Play in the Snow…after all, that’s the most fun!

Now that I’m home and not parked on the highway any more(!), I plan to play in the snow and curl up on the couch with a fire in the fireplace and watch some Christmas movies ;)

13. Holiday Baking: Gingerbread

13 Dec

Gingerbread just screams “Christmas” to me…it comes in so many forms: cookies, cakes, Gingerbread houses, ornaments, etc. One way or the other, you probably encounter some form of Gingerbread during the holidays! Here are some ways to incorporate it into your holiday season:

1. Gingerbread House, $9.99 at World Market…shameless plug for the ‘Market, since my Dad works in the corp. division ;) I love making Gingerbread houses during Christmas…its your chance to showcase your talent!

2. “Gingerbread” Ornaments – Very easy to make…here is a recipe and directions for how to make these!

An example of what it looks like when ready!

3. Colonial Williamsburg Gingerbread Cookies – Recipe can be found here. This recipe is excellent!

Its currently “blizzarding” at my house, which is really rare for this area (especially before Christmas!)…this is our second snow before Christmas, in fact. I LOVE it. It reminds me of the good ol’ days in the ‘Burg, where we got snow every single day it felt like. Except, I like it a whole lot more here than I did there, because HERE the whole place shuts down if it snows. There, life goes on…you have to go out in the snow…haha ;)

A Weekend of Improvisation ;)

28 Feb

After failing to get to a Hot Yoga class yesterday, I knew that my goal for today was to finally make it to the studio! Ideally, I’d love to do Hot Yoga at least once a weekend, but between snowed-in weekends we’ve had since January and then traveling home a few weekends ago, I have only had the chance to go three times so far. I really wanted to get a session in before I go home for Spring Break on Friday(!)…and I might be making a trip out sometime next week to my favorite Hot Yoga studio near my hometown ;)

Anyways, I woke up at 6am this morning with a sore throat…and the TV volume up pretty loud. Apparently I fell asleep while watching SNL last night and slept for ~6 hours with the volume up loud. Did anyone see SNL last night? I love J. Lo! But back to that sore throat…I’ve been having “allergies” the past week or so, and I’m beginning to think its a cold…but I don’t know. It hasn’t gotten worse, but it certainly hasn’t gotten better. When I woke up at 6am, I chugged a pack of Emergen-C…and then another around 11. Can’t be getting sick right before Spring Break!!! After all of that, I decided I would start on some school work (surprise, I know), and I also did laundry and cleaned the kitchen, my room, and bathroom. I was on a roll apparently ;) Then I still really wanted to get in a 5-mile run, so I braved the cold and snow flurries and went out for the run a little before I was supposed to go to Hot Yoga. I got back around 3, and left for yoga at 3:30. I felt fine, but I probably should’ve drank more water and possibly had 1/2 banana. The yoga studio was extra hot and humid today…even the instructor noticed and acknowledged it…she turned on the ceiling fan and opened the door to let in a little cool air! I started to feel very lightheaded and nauseated while we were standing and doing balance poses, so I had to go into Child’s Pose a few times. This is sooooo rare for me…I never get that dizzy feeling! I think it was a combination of the extra hot studio, sweating on my 5-mile run before yoga, and not replacing electrolytes. I also normally do Hot Yoga first thing in the morning, so I have never ran before a class before. But overall, it was still a great session and I feel really rejuvenated now! :)

I’m sure that running outside didn’t help my potential “cold”…but when I have something I want to do, better believe I’m going to do it! ha ha…so I didn’t get my 10-miler today, but I got 5 yesterday, 5 today and Hot Yoga. So it all balanced out anyways :) It was a pretty good weekend, and the best part is that in less than 5 days, I’ll be headed home for a whole week! ;)

Fail.

27 Feb

I had big plans for a Hot Yoga class this morning. I went to bed relatively early and made myself get out of bed at 8:50am to get ready and drive to the studio. I looked out the window…surprise, surprise–there was snow on the ground. If you know me, you know that I am NOT going to drive in snow, especially since my townhouse is kind of at the top of a hill and I’m terrified of my car sliding around. I meant SUV…with 4-wheel drive. Ha ha yes I’m just afraid for no reason, I admit it. But anyways, I had to skip Hot Yoga…I was really looking forward to it after hitting the gym hard this week. I did Body Pump twice, lots of running, and lots of elliptical intervals throughout the week. So that was a little disappointing, but I might go tomorrow afternoon…its just such a good feeling after 90 minutes of sweating out toxins and getting some good stretching in. Does anyone else love Hot Yoga as much as I do?!

I had plans for today to be my “rest” day, only doing Hot Yoga, and then running 10 miles tomorrow. But since that clearly didn’t happen, I ran 5 miles on the treadmill today and tackled a few hills/intervals…I’m thinking of running another 5 tomorrow and then doing Hot Yoga in the afternoon. I know it isn’t going to be 10 miles all at once, but it still accomplishes the basic goal of running 10 miles this weekend + Hot Yoga. So I’ll go with it I guess :) I can’t wait until next week, when I get to go to my hometown gym (YMCA) alllll week! I miss the fab Spinning classes and the best Ab classes I’ve ever been to…and all of the instructors are awesome! Its the little things in life that make me happy ;) I also will probably get in a 12 or 13 mile run while I’m home…just as prep for my Half on March 21st. I’ve maintained my endurance and have been running 10-12 mile runs regularly, so I’m not really building up. I have been working on more intervals/high intensity training and I think I’ll definitely run the Half in less time this year than I did last year. We shall see I guess ;)

Well I’m going to relax & enjoy the rest of the day…I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! :)

Three Things Thursday

25 Feb

1. What is up with this snow?! I’ve been reminiscing to this past Sunday, when I went out for a fabulous 11-mile run in 60 degree weather…and I wake up to SNOW on the ground this morning! Summer cannot get here fast enough! Is anyone else a summer-loving, sun-worshipper like I am? I knew there was a reason I’m a lifeguard…

2. I have something I’m really looking forward to! My university hosts a really, really big Relay for Life every April, and I’ve participated every year since I’ve been in school here. Last year I was even selected to be on the Planning Committee, which was lots of fun. This year, I chose to be on Relay Staff, which is less obligation but I’m still able to do a lot of things surrounding Relay. Well, anyways, my aunt “Sissy” (that’s been my nickname for her since I was about 2!) was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer back in April of 2008, which was coincidentally my first year participating in Relay. So I’ve always dedicated my participation in honor of her every year! She is still not cancer-free but is doing much better. The exciting part is, this year she is going to be participating! I created a Relay team for my family, and myself along with some cousins, my aunt, and my mom are all going to make the 5-hour drive up to my university for a weekend in April just to be a part of our Relay for Life! I’m so thrilled…we’re planning a theme, decorating our campsite, and making tshirts…plus my aunt Sissy is going to be selling bracelets raising money for Ovarian cancer research! Its such a great cause, and I just love seeing so many people at Relay all night long when they could be living the typical college lifestyle of partying ’til 3am and passing out in the bushes at someone’s house.

3. I had a really awesome BodyPump workout last night…and I decided I needed some more of it in my life. Twice a week, no exceptions! I know I’ll definitely see more tone/definition…I did a Body Sculpting class once a week three semesters ago and I seriously could see the definition in my arms…just from once a week! But I’m pushing for 2 times a week now…I’ve become the Cardio Queen lately and I’m missing my old strength training routine!

Running, TJ’s, Family, and Love…Perfection

14 Feb

Wow its been such a busy weekend! I felt like I wasn’t able to relax at all while I was home, but I did a lot of fun things so its okay ;) Friday, after I did an Abs class, my friend Brian met me at the Y for Spin class. It was nice to catch up and we got a good workout in too. I didn’t push myself 100% like I usually do, because I knew I was going to be running a 14k the next day, Saturday.

Saturday morning I woke up at 5:30am to get ready and drive to Virginia Beach for the VA Is For Lovers 14k…well actually my dad drove. I love my fam…they always go to every race to support me, even when we have to wake up at an ungodly hour! :) Thank goodness my dad drove, since we had 3″ of snow on the ground when we were leaving! Umm…the weathermen did not call for that much snow! They said only a dusting…and obviously the city bought into it, because there was not a single snow plow on the roads near my house. In fact, we had to drive about 35mph until we were about 20 minutes into the trip, when the roads finally cleared up. But luckily, we left early enough to have extra time to get to the race location. I’m going to shamelessly plug J&A Racing for again putting on a fabulous race! If anyone has ever heard of the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, well, J&A puts that race on too. They did a spectacular job on this VIFL 14k as well…and I’ve heard that the inaugural Blue Moon Wicked 10k (October) was awesome. They give awesome finisher’s “gifts” and medals and nice technical running shirts at all three of their races. I also like the courses as well. I may be partial because I just love that these races are local and I love Va Beach ;)

After the race Saturday…which I ended up being the 481st finisher out of 3,000…crazy. I didn’t realize I even did that good…haha. The fam and I went to Panera for lunch…which is by far my favorite place, ever. I choose Panera over any other restaurant…seriously! Then we went to Trader Joes…ahh its like heaven. I love walking around and looking at all of the neat things to buy. We ended up with quite a bit of things: quinoa, variety pack of TJ’s hummus, pita chips, almond butter, no salt added albacore tuna, lots of 0% greek yogurt, my fave…and a few other things. I have a fully stocked kitchen back at school now ;)

Saturday night, the boy and I had a Valentines Day date night a little early, because I had to leave to go back to school today. We went to the Cheesecake Factory, where we proceeded to wait an hour and 15 minutes(!) to be seated. It was so crazy there last night! However, every experience I’ve had at that particular Cheesecake Factory has been super-crowded and long waits…I think its because its the only one in the area! I got a Barbeque Ranch Grilled Chicken Salad…obviously not the healthiest thing, but I only ate 1/3 of it…their portion sizes are humongous! Afterwards, we were planning to go see Dear John. However, it took more time in the restaurant than we thought it would, and both of the nearby theaters had a showing at the time we preferred. So I quickly called my mom and got her to look up movie times at other theaters, and a few minutes later we decided to drive to the only theater that had a showing we could make it to…which happened to be on the way home, so it worked out well! I don’t have a lot to say about that movie, except this: the movie is NOTHING like the book. The plot location wasn’t even the same?! Overall, it was a decent movie, and of course had sad parts (this is Nicholas Sparks we’re talking about!) but I would recommend not reading the book before you see it if you plan to! Its not a huge deal, its just hard to separate what you read and what you’re seeing on the screen. I kept telling my boyfriend “No! This is not how it happened!” hahaha :)

So after not getting home ’til almost 1am last night…and then not going to sleep until 3am, I am exhausted! I made the 5-hour drive back to school this afternoon, and it was extra-boring and seemed longer than usual. Blah. I stopped by the grocery store on the way in because *surprise, surprise* we’re supposed to get about 3″-6″ of snow overnight & tomorrow. Just what I wanted!!! ha ha just kidding. I have never been more ready for the beach and hot weather! Well I think I’m in need of some serious sleep…back to the grind tomorrow…that is unless classes get canceled! Fingers crossed ;)

Three Things Thursday

11 Feb

1. I’m going HOME tomorrow morning for the weekend! I’m so excited. It’s been about a month since I’ve been back at school, and I miss the fam, the boy, and my little Chloe sooooo much :) I’m also running the VIFL 14k on Saturday morning, hitting up Trader Joes afterwards (because there isn’t one near my college!), going on an early Valentine’s Day date Saturday night with the boy…Cheesecake Factory and dragging him to see Dear John! I love that he puts up with me ;)

My lovely Chloe ;)

2. I had a huge revelation on Tuesday…okay, not really. haha. But since my car has been snowed in over a week now, I haven’t driven out to the gym. Anyways, Tues & Thurs are my long days of classes and I have a break from 1:45 to 3:30pm, so I walk to my gym that I joined a few weeks ago. Its right near my last class of the day, and its nicer and less crowded than the nearest on-campus gym (there are two…one is super-nice, the other…really old!). Only problem is, now I don’t use that 2-hour break to read for classes anymore. Oops! Well, I like running better anyways… :)

3. Speaking of my car being snowed in…well tonight I took the shovel out there and did WORK. And got a good workout, too, I think. Who knew snow and a shovel could get your blood pumping?! Oh, by the way, I have 4-wheel drive, but I’m still terrified that I’ll slide on the ice or whatever…so I tried to shovel as much as I could. I probably didn’t have to shovel at all…my beast of an SUV would’ve probably made it through there…haha!

Sometimes You Get What You Want :)

10 Feb

So I woke up to howling winds this morning, but I didn’t think too much of it. Then I heard that the temperature was 14 degrees with a wind chill of 1 degree. Yikes! Walking out the door to catch the bus, I knew it was going to be a miserable day, weather-wise. With 50-60 MPH winds (which are still happening…its sooo loud and scary!) and about 2 feet of snow on the ground, there were some massive snow drifts building plus snow flying through the air. It was so bad that all of the hard work of clearing the roads and sidewalks was for no good. There was 3” of snow covering the sidewalk to the bus stop, and the main road in town was covered in snow and ice. I saw so many cars sliding and “fish-tailing” down the road…glad I wasn’t driving! Although it would be nice to be able to drive again…so tired of being snowed in!

Once I finally got back to the house, I knew I absolutely did not want to go back outside again…so I did a Kathy Smith Strength Training video. Its one of my favorites, actually, and its a really good workout! I start sweating within 5 minutes of starting…its that good ;) I’ve been upping my running mileage lately, so I figured it would be a nice break to do some strength/toning workouts.

Last year, I ran the Shamrock Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA for the first time, and absolutely loved it. For the previous three years (during high school/freshman in college), I participated in the 8k run that they have…but I was ready to challenge myself. So I started training for the half…and got injured. I was sooo mad and frustrated that I couldn’t even run a mile without my leg hurting. I was the “elliptical queen” for about 2.5 months because I couldn’t run, but I wanted to keep my endurance up. A few weeks before the half, my leg was feeling pretty good, so I went out and did an 8-mile run. I then proceeded to run the half two weeks later, having only one “long” run (8m) under my belt! Well, it was definitely a challenge, but I ended up doing well. Especially for not being able to have trained properly! Flash forward to Fall 2009, and I had dreams of running the Shamrock Marathon this Spring (March 2010). I kept up with my training runs through mid-December, and then I started to have some leg/knee pain, and I had to back off. I was disappointed, but I still managed to do some long-distance runs. Once I got back to school, though, I was unable to get in my 16, 18, 20+ mile runs because of the snowy weather (and class schedules). So I disappointingly changed my plans and am pushing my marathon training back a few months. In the meantime, I wanted to run the Shamrock HALF again, to improve my time. Plus I can run 13.1 miles now easily…and its much more enjoyable :) The problem–the half-marathon always sells out in early December. So I went on Craigslist and placed an ad for a Half-marathon race bib….and less than 24 hours later, a girl emailed me and offered to sell hers. She has a stress fracture and is unable to participate. I feel sorry for her…I know how it feels to be injured! But now I get to run the half…under someone else’s name. haha can’t wait!

I’m still thinking about some more races this year…I like having something to train for. It makes long-distance running that much more fun :) So far I have a February race (VIFL 14k) and a March race (Shamrock Half)…and did I mention this is the first year I can partake in the free Yuengling beer at the end of the Shamrock?! So excited :)
