14. Holiday Fitness: Spinning

14 Dec

I love Spinning. Well, I’m biased…I teach Spin, so naturally I love it. But it really is a great workout, and I think everyone should try it! :) Its such a good cardio workout, but it also is great for cross-training, building endurance, and strengthening your legs! To top it off, its typically taught in a high-energy atmosphere and its so easy to get into the workout “groove” in a Spin class. Here’s a Christmas playlist that I made for a 30-minute holiday Spin sesh:

1. Santa Baby (Pussycat Dolls) – 3:01 Warm-up

2. Wizards in Winter (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 3:06 Seated Flat/Sprint

a. 0:31, 1:16, 2:11

3. Jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms) – 2:10 Standing Climb

4. Queen of the Winter Night (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 3:12 Standing Climb/Run with Resistance

a. 0:28, 1:24, 2:40

5. My Only Wish This Year (Britney Spears) – 4:17 Standing Climb/Jumps on a Hill

a. 0:53, 2:11, 3:10

6. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (Miley Cyrus) – 2:23 Seated Flat/Sprint

a. 0:50, 1:40

7. Wish Liszt (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 3:42 Seated Climb/Sprint

a. 0:47, 1:52, 2:30, 3:04 (Standing Climb)

8. Mad Russian’s Christmas (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 4:43

a. Climb 0:00-1:14

b. Sprint 1:14-1:38

c. Standing Climb 1:38-2:21

d. Sprint 2:21-2:58

e. Standing Climb 2:58-3:38

f. Sprint 3:38-3:52

g. Standing Climb 3:52-4:12

h. Sprint 4:12-4:38

9. The Angel at the Top of My Tree (Kenny Chesney) – 3:27 Cooldown

10. Let It Snow (Point of Grace) – 4:11 Cooldown

Remember to have fun…and don’t forget to stretch it out after your workout!

“…Too Busy Being Fabulous”

2 Sep

So I’m sitting here in Starbucks…which has become my second home these days. My first home being law school…haha. And thirdly(?) would be my actual home. Yep, the school year has kicked into full gear, and I’m surprisingly calm about it all. I feel like I have gotten into a pretty good routine already, even after just (almost) two weeks of classes. I had a few thoughts cross my mind last week that maybe, just maybe I was getting in too deep…but then I realized all of that was just nerves, and I made myself look at this as a positive thing and realized that this is what I’ve always wanted to do! And you know what, I find myself enjoying sitting in class and LEARNING…yeah, who woulda thought?! haha…I have pretty much always found classes to be boring since high school and through college, but now, I enjoy the opportunity to learn. I think its because this is what I have dreamed of doing for a very long time, and can I just say, it feels really good to be accomplishing big goals that I’ve set for myself!

I told myself that I was not going to back off any of my workout time, and so far, I’ve kept my word. No one messes with “workin’ on my fitness”…haha ;) I am still teaching Spin a few times a week…makin’ that money…or very little money…haha. I’ve had to switch up my workout schedule quite a bit, and I find myself reading cases while running on the treadmill often, but hey, it goes by a lot quicker! I can’t wait for it to get cooler outside though, because running out on the backroads in the Fall is my favorite! Unfortunately for me, I haven’t been running enough long runs in prep for the NYC Marathon…so yeah, I don’t know where I stand with that right now. I want to run it, but I also want to train properly. If I can squeeze in a long run before this weekend is over, I think I could still pull it off. I guess I’ll see how that goes…ha. Seems as though the weekends are busy lately! I think I’m pretty much booked through the Fall…but if you know me, you know I thrive off of being busy! ;)

You Spin My Head Right ‘Round

21 Jul

This has been my second official week of teaching Spinning/Group Cycle, and I’m LOVING it so far. I’ve taken Spin for years and always thought I’d like to try out teaching the class and so here I am! Its crazy that I’m finally doing what I’ve dreamed of for the longest time, and I really enjoy it :) My class just seems to go by so quickly…but not without some hard work involved! We were all sweaty messes today…I’m just glad that I’m able to help people get a good workout in to start their day! I’ve been in their shoes before and I loved taking Spin classes for the intense workout that you got in such a short period of time! I teach a 45-minute Starter cycle early mornings and I find that to be almost more challenging than a regular 1 hour Cycle class…not only do you have to cram an intense workout into a shorter period of time, but you have to keep it interesting without making the class too advanced for the newbies! I think its safe to say that today’s class was just that! ;)

Here are some songs that I’m loving for class right now:

  • Somebody to Love–Justin Bieber *Good song to use for jumps!
  • Airplanes–B.o.B *Climb/Run with Resistance!
  • First Time–Lifehouse *Seated Flat/Jumps/Sprints!
  • Chelsea Dagger–The Fratellis *Seated Flat/Sprints!
  • Heartbreak Warfare–John Mayer *Climb!
  • Summer of ’69–Bryan Adams *Seated Flat!

*These are just suggestions! I’ve varied them in my classes…most of these songs can be used a variety of ways :)

Three Things Thursday

20 May

1. I got a new treadmill at HOME! I’ve wanted one for such a long time…just for those days when the weather is gross or I don’t have time to drive to the gym. I tested it out today with a 7-mile run…its awesome ;)

2. I went to my first Spin class in forEVER at my hometown gym last night. Saw some of my favorite people too…I’m so glad to be home and working out at my favorite gym!

3. I’ve been really, really relaxed (i.e. lazy) this week…minus hitting the gym, appointments, doing fun things and stopping at Starbucks for iced coffee. Ha. I guess my excuse is I’m living it up before I start working???

A Day Full of Potential

2 Apr

So I had my day allllll planned out yesterday…I woke up earlier than usual, packed my car, went to the gym, then went to classes. I was on my way home by 2pm…and then I went up the first big hill on the way out of the ‘Burg. And my car like…stuttered? coughed? hesitated? Ha I don’t even know the words to describe it. I kept driving, thinking it was a one-time occurrence. Oh but I was clearly wrong, and I had just gotten on I-81, which is the scariest highway of all time. Traffic rarely goes under 80mph and the majority of the road is overtaken by 18-wheelers. Always a stressful ride…even though I’m only on 81 for about 40 minutes. Thank goodness! Well, yesterday, my car kept doing the hesitating thing, so I was clearly freaking out. I pulled over at a rest area and called my dad because he’s the best mechanic I know…although its really hard to explain car problems over the phone. He was convinced it was bad fuel and told me to keep driving. At this point, I’m in tears. I was TERRIFIED to keep driving…but I did. I even went to an auto parts store at my dad’s suggestion and bought something to put into the gas tank to fix the water-in-the-gasoline problem. Well, I thought it had worked for about 30 miles…then it started messing up again. I was a MESS at this point and called my mom in tears. My parents ended up driving out and meeting me halfway so my dad could drive my car home. Let’s just say my parents are the greatest.

After THAT experience, I was crazy enough to get back in my car today and drive to the gym. Because my dad said it was driveable. And because I was not skipping 9:15 Spin class and lifting afterwards. I’m pretty stubborn. Haha. I had my fingers crossed the entire drive to and from the gym! Luckily, I made it back home safely. I spent the rest of today laying outside in the 85-degree weather! Does that really happen in April?! Wow, it has been a gorgeous day :) I also got a littleeeee bit sunburned…or a lot. Oops. I honestly think its because I haven’t been out in a bikini since last summer so my skin was bound to burn. Since I don’t go tanning anymore, I don’t keep that year-round fakebake glow. And I’m totally okay with that. Except that getting sunburned today probably wasn’t much better than laying in a tanning bed. Oh well, hopefully that won’t happen again!

Tomorrow morning is the 5k with the boy and one of our friends…I’m a little pumped. I want to get a PR…well beat my time from last year…for the 5k this time around. haha. I’ve sure been running enough sprints to pick up my speed! I’m a little nervous about the heat actually…I much prefer to run in cool weather, but its going to feel like summer here, even in the morning! Oh well better get used to it…warm weather is definitely among us ;)

Fail.

27 Feb

I had big plans for a Hot Yoga class this morning. I went to bed relatively early and made myself get out of bed at 8:50am to get ready and drive to the studio. I looked out the window…surprise, surprise–there was snow on the ground. If you know me, you know that I am NOT going to drive in snow, especially since my townhouse is kind of at the top of a hill and I’m terrified of my car sliding around. I meant SUV…with 4-wheel drive. Ha ha yes I’m just afraid for no reason, I admit it. But anyways, I had to skip Hot Yoga…I was really looking forward to it after hitting the gym hard this week. I did Body Pump twice, lots of running, and lots of elliptical intervals throughout the week. So that was a little disappointing, but I might go tomorrow afternoon…its just such a good feeling after 90 minutes of sweating out toxins and getting some good stretching in. Does anyone else love Hot Yoga as much as I do?!

I had plans for today to be my “rest” day, only doing Hot Yoga, and then running 10 miles tomorrow. But since that clearly didn’t happen, I ran 5 miles on the treadmill today and tackled a few hills/intervals…I’m thinking of running another 5 tomorrow and then doing Hot Yoga in the afternoon. I know it isn’t going to be 10 miles all at once, but it still accomplishes the basic goal of running 10 miles this weekend + Hot Yoga. So I’ll go with it I guess :) I can’t wait until next week, when I get to go to my hometown gym (YMCA) alllll week! I miss the fab Spinning classes and the best Ab classes I’ve ever been to…and all of the instructors are awesome! Its the little things in life that make me happy ;) I also will probably get in a 12 or 13 mile run while I’m home…just as prep for my Half on March 21st. I’ve maintained my endurance and have been running 10-12 mile runs regularly, so I’m not really building up. I have been working on more intervals/high intensity training and I think I’ll definitely run the Half in less time this year than I did last year. We shall see I guess ;)

Well I’m going to relax & enjoy the rest of the day…I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! :)

Fitness Philosophy

22 Feb

Today I was randomly thinking about my passion for fitness, and I realized I’ve worked out regularly since the end of 8th grade! In a very “Forrest Gump” fashion (ha ha ha), one day I just started running and it kind of stuck. Haha…that analogy is pretty funny, not to mention I love Forrest Gump. Am I the only person who watches it every time its on TV?! Anyways, back to my point…I just found a passion for running and working out, and looking back its crazy to think a 14-year old could be so dedicated to something healthy like that! To be honest, I wasn’t raised that way. I mean, as a child, I pretty much stayed outside and rode my bike or ran around outside, but my parents weren’t (and still aren’t) marathoners or fitness-crazed people like I am now…haha. My dad will ride his bike from time to time and my family will go on long walks or hikes, usually with my prompting…but that’s it. So I don’t know how that spark for fitness and health was instilled in me. I do have to give my parents cred: my family eats pretty healthily, at least 85-90% of the time. Its not perfect, but its pretty darn good :)

Anyways, when I started running way back in 2003, I would run like a mile at most. In 9th grade, when I started cheerleading, we had conditioning during the summer and we would run a mile, including up and down the stadium bleachers. I remember how everyone hated it, myself included. But it didn’t take long for me to start to appreciate it, and I remember the first time I did a mile run+bleachers at cheer practice and then I went home and ran another mile. Two miles in one day! That was a huge deal for me at the time, and looking back, its crazy to see how far I’ve come! I remember all throughout high school, I came home and did Pilates every single day after I ran, I kid you not. Wow…I don’t even do that now, but I work out harder and longer as a whole nowadays. Pilates is awesome though….maybe I should revisit my high school philosophy!

My junior year of high school, I joined the YMCA and would go about three or four times a week, on nights I didn’t have to cheer at basketball games. This is when the calorie-counting really began…seeing it on the cardio machines as I worked out. You know, I actually think I had a healthier philosophy before I joined the gym and seeing how many calories I burned after my workout! I even shared my struggle with the numbers in this post, which happened in college. However, joining the Y back in high school did make me more interested in new workouts, and when I went to college, I started doing group fitness classes at least half of the week, alternating with running or elliptical the other days. This is also when I started using workouts to burn off calories I knew I was going to drink away on the weekends. Bad philosophy! After using my freshman year of college as an excuse to go partying crazy(!), I grew up finally. I rarely ever drink now…a glass of wine here and there and at weddings or big parties…okay, I tend to go overboard but its so much fun…guess I haven’t grown up completely! But overall, I’m a lot healthier now. I have a healthier relationship with exercise, sleep (going to bed at 2am used to be normal), and alcohol (no more Wasted Wednesdays!). My running ability really has metamorphosed since that first day in 2003, and sometimes I’m shocked when I look back and see how far I’ve come! Fitness is a huge part of my life, and I love that my family and my boyfriend respect that enough wake up at 5am to go support me at races and to not think I’m crazy to wake up at 6:45am on a Saturday to go to Spin class! To me, it’s just fun…I look forward to it. The key is to find something you enjoy, and you’ll find that you really love how being fit makes you feel!
