“…Too Busy Being Fabulous”

2 Sep

So I’m sitting here in Starbucks…which has become my second home these days. My first home being law school…haha. And thirdly(?) would be my actual home. Yep, the school year has kicked into full gear, and I’m surprisingly calm about it all. I feel like I have gotten into a pretty good routine already, even after just (almost) two weeks of classes. I had a few thoughts cross my mind last week that maybe, just maybe I was getting in too deep…but then I realized all of that was just nerves, and I made myself look at this as a positive thing and realized that this is what I’ve always wanted to do! And you know what, I find myself enjoying sitting in class and LEARNING…yeah, who woulda thought?! haha…I have pretty much always found classes to be boring since high school and through college, but now, I enjoy the opportunity to learn. I think its because this is what I have dreamed of doing for a very long time, and can I just say, it feels really good to be accomplishing big goals that I’ve set for myself!

I told myself that I was not going to back off any of my workout time, and so far, I’ve kept my word. No one messes with “workin’ on my fitness”…haha ;) I am still teaching Spin a few times a week…makin’ that money…or very little money…haha. I’ve had to switch up my workout schedule quite a bit, and I find myself reading cases while running on the treadmill often, but hey, it goes by a lot quicker! I can’t wait for it to get cooler outside though, because running out on the backroads in the Fall is my favorite! Unfortunately for me, I haven’t been running enough long runs in prep for the NYC Marathon…so yeah, I don’t know where I stand with that right now. I want to run it, but I also want to train properly. If I can squeeze in a long run before this weekend is over, I think I could still pull it off. I guess I’ll see how that goes…ha. Seems as though the weekends are busy lately! I think I’m pretty much booked through the Fall…but if you know me, you know I thrive off of being busy! ;)

Sometimes You Get What You Want :)

10 Feb

So I woke up to howling winds this morning, but I didn’t think too much of it. Then I heard that the temperature was 14 degrees with a wind chill of 1 degree. Yikes! Walking out the door to catch the bus, I knew it was going to be a miserable day, weather-wise. With 50-60 MPH winds (which are still happening…its sooo loud and scary!) and about 2 feet of snow on the ground, there were some massive snow drifts building plus snow flying through the air. It was so bad that all of the hard work of clearing the roads and sidewalks was for no good. There was 3” of snow covering the sidewalk to the bus stop, and the main road in town was covered in snow and ice. I saw so many cars sliding and “fish-tailing” down the road…glad I wasn’t driving! Although it would be nice to be able to drive again…so tired of being snowed in!

Once I finally got back to the house, I knew I absolutely did not want to go back outside again…so I did a Kathy Smith Strength Training video. Its one of my favorites, actually, and its a really good workout! I start sweating within 5 minutes of starting…its that good ;) I’ve been upping my running mileage lately, so I figured it would be a nice break to do some strength/toning workouts.

Last year, I ran the Shamrock Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, VA for the first time, and absolutely loved it. For the previous three years (during high school/freshman in college), I participated in the 8k run that they have…but I was ready to challenge myself. So I started training for the half…and got injured. I was sooo mad and frustrated that I couldn’t even run a mile without my leg hurting. I was the “elliptical queen” for about 2.5 months because I couldn’t run, but I wanted to keep my endurance up. A few weeks before the half, my leg was feeling pretty good, so I went out and did an 8-mile run. I then proceeded to run the half two weeks later, having only one “long” run (8m) under my belt! Well, it was definitely a challenge, but I ended up doing well. Especially for not being able to have trained properly! Flash forward to Fall 2009, and I had dreams of running the Shamrock Marathon this Spring (March 2010). I kept up with my training runs through mid-December, and then I started to have some leg/knee pain, and I had to back off. I was disappointed, but I still managed to do some long-distance runs. Once I got back to school, though, I was unable to get in my 16, 18, 20+ mile runs because of the snowy weather (and class schedules). So I disappointingly changed my plans and am pushing my marathon training back a few months. In the meantime, I wanted to run the Shamrock HALF again, to improve my time. Plus I can run 13.1 miles now easily…and its much more enjoyable :) The problem–the half-marathon always sells out in early December. So I went on Craigslist and placed an ad for a Half-marathon race bib….and less than 24 hours later, a girl emailed me and offered to sell hers. She has a stress fracture and is unable to participate. I feel sorry for her…I know how it feels to be injured! But now I get to run the half…under someone else’s name. haha can’t wait!

I’m still thinking about some more races this year…I like having something to train for. It makes long-distance running that much more fun :) So far I have a February race (VIFL 14k) and a March race (Shamrock Half)…and did I mention this is the first year I can partake in the free Yuengling beer at the end of the Shamrock?! So excited :)

Winter Wonderland :)

21 Dec

It’s soooo nice to say that the semester is completely over with! And I just found out I have a 3.8 GPA, which means Dean’s List AND the fact that I’ve never had a GPA that high in college is just exciting! I have truly been discouraged by grades in college up until this semester, as I came from high school were I had a 4.3 GPA to barely making a 3.0 each semester. But now I beat my goal :) Just means I have to keep that up for my next & LAST semester in college!!!

The holiday parties started this past weekend, as I went to my boyfriend’s sister’s Annual Christmas party on Friday. It was a great time and got to spend time with some of my favorites :) Saturday, I went shopping with my Mama…we’re sooo behind on shopping, and still have a little to do! The day was perfect…not to mention, we even got a dusting of snow…even though the rest of VA got like two FEET of snow. But hey, you take what you can get! Sunday, my family went to Greenville, NC to my aunt’s house for our annual Christmas party with my Mama’s fam. It was really nice and it’s always fun spending time with family & friends.

I can hardly believe that Christmas is in 4 more days! This month has gone by so quickly, and I feel like there is still so much to do! Today has already been productive, though…I have started painting the wine glasses for my fav Hokies & Wahoo fans and they’re turning out great! I also baked three batches of sugar cookies…now we get to frost them…my favorite part :) Still have a lot of baking to do, but I’m about to get in a good, long run since its a nice 45 degrees…perfect running weather. Need to get back on the marathon training plan…I’ve been doing a lot of cross-training (Spinning, elliptical, etc.) because my right Quad has been hurting. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it a long ways today…need to get ready and go since today is the shortest day of the year!
