14. Holiday Fitness: Spinning

14 Dec

I love Spinning. Well, I’m biased…I teach Spin, so naturally I love it. But it really is a great workout, and I think everyone should try it! :) Its such a good cardio workout, but it also is great for cross-training, building endurance, and strengthening your legs! To top it off, its typically taught in a high-energy atmosphere and its so easy to get into the workout “groove” in a Spin class. Here’s a Christmas playlist that I made for a 30-minute holiday Spin sesh:

1. Santa Baby (Pussycat Dolls) – 3:01 Warm-up

2. Wizards in Winter (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 3:06 Seated Flat/Sprint

a. 0:31, 1:16, 2:11

3. Jingle Bell Rock (Bobby Helms) – 2:10 Standing Climb

4. Queen of the Winter Night (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 3:12 Standing Climb/Run with Resistance

a. 0:28, 1:24, 2:40

5. My Only Wish This Year (Britney Spears) – 4:17 Standing Climb/Jumps on a Hill

a. 0:53, 2:11, 3:10

6. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree (Miley Cyrus) – 2:23 Seated Flat/Sprint

a. 0:50, 1:40

7. Wish Liszt (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 3:42 Seated Climb/Sprint

a. 0:47, 1:52, 2:30, 3:04 (Standing Climb)

8. Mad Russian’s Christmas (Trans Siberian Orchestra) – 4:43

a. Climb 0:00-1:14

b. Sprint 1:14-1:38

c. Standing Climb 1:38-2:21

d. Sprint 2:21-2:58

e. Standing Climb 2:58-3:38

f. Sprint 3:38-3:52

g. Standing Climb 3:52-4:12

h. Sprint 4:12-4:38

9. The Angel at the Top of My Tree (Kenny Chesney) – 3:27 Cooldown

10. Let It Snow (Point of Grace) – 4:11 Cooldown

Remember to have fun…and don’t forget to stretch it out after your workout!

2. Gifts for Runners

2 Dec

What kind of gifts are suitable for the runner in your life? Well, there are a LOT of interesting gadgets that runners will like. I should know…I’m a runner, and usually my Christmas list is filled with items that I can use for running. Many of these items are things that I’ve read reviews of on other blogs, and everything I’ve used has been an excellent investment! Here ya go:

iFitness Lycra Mini Sport Belt $19.95

I LOVE my iFitness belt (I have it in Hot Pink) because it really does stretch to hold a phone, gels, iPod, etc. It also stays in place really well while running. I got mine last Christmas and have loved it ever since!

Garmin Forerunner 405 (Right now it is $196 on Walmart.com)

This is one that I actually read about MANY times on others’ blogs. There are several types of Garmin Forerunners that are a range of prices, but this particular one is not as “clunky” and it just looks more aesthetically pleasing, if you will. I actually bought mine on Amazon.com recently for $182; however, the last time I checked it had gone back up to $229. I would recommend shopping around before you buy this, because you can definitely find a good deal!

Tavo Gloves for iPod & iPhone $29.95

These were on my Christmas list last year as well. In the middle of winter, its too cold to run without gloves, but if you’re using an iPod, it is impossible to get the sensor in the wheel or screen of an iPod to work with regular gloves. Before receiving these Tavo gloves, I had been taking cheap $2 gloves from Walmart and cutting off the tip of a glove finger in order to operate my iPod while running. These are a lifesaver, and they’re EXTREMELY warm! They’re also relatively difficult to find online, but I’ve linked to a site that has one size of them.

Nike + iPod Sport Kit $29

This was my primary method of measuring my mileage, time, and pace before I bought the Garmin. Many people say that it is not as accurate as a Garmin; however, I ran a half-marathon using Nike + to keep tabs on my pace, and I finished in the exact amount of time that I estimated. So, bottom line, it was accurate to the minute for me…maybe not down to the very second, but within the minute is pretty good for something that costs only $30! If you don’t have Nike running shoes that are “Nike + compatible”, you can always buy a clip to put the sensor on any running shoe!

JVC Gumy Headphone for iPod/MP3 $10 at Walmart

I don’t know about you, but it seems like the headphones I got with my iPod DON’T last very long! As a runner, replacing headphones can become quite frequent, especially since they tend to get wet from sweat and running in the rain! Instead of going back to the Apple Store and spending $20ish on new headphones, I go to Walmart or Target and buy cheaper ones like these JVC ones. I like these because you can match them to the color of your iPod! I love my purple iPod & matching purple headphones :) This makes an excellent stocking stuffer that any runner (who uses an MP3 player) will appreciate!

A few other suggestions for stocking stuffers:

1. Jelly Belly Sport Beans – Good for those who do “longer” runs and need electrolytes/carbs during their run!

2. Clif Shots/Blocks – Similar to the Sport Beans, it provides carbs/electrolytes during a run

3. Running socks are always a good option, too. Try Underarmour or Nike…I’ve always had good luck with both brands!

You Spin My Head Right ‘Round

21 Jul

This has been my second official week of teaching Spinning/Group Cycle, and I’m LOVING it so far. I’ve taken Spin for years and always thought I’d like to try out teaching the class and so here I am! Its crazy that I’m finally doing what I’ve dreamed of for the longest time, and I really enjoy it :) My class just seems to go by so quickly…but not without some hard work involved! We were all sweaty messes today…I’m just glad that I’m able to help people get a good workout in to start their day! I’ve been in their shoes before and I loved taking Spin classes for the intense workout that you got in such a short period of time! I teach a 45-minute Starter cycle early mornings and I find that to be almost more challenging than a regular 1 hour Cycle class…not only do you have to cram an intense workout into a shorter period of time, but you have to keep it interesting without making the class too advanced for the newbies! I think its safe to say that today’s class was just that! ;)

Here are some songs that I’m loving for class right now:

  • Somebody to Love–Justin Bieber *Good song to use for jumps!
  • Airplanes–B.o.B *Climb/Run with Resistance!
  • First Time–Lifehouse *Seated Flat/Jumps/Sprints!
  • Chelsea Dagger–The Fratellis *Seated Flat/Sprints!
  • Heartbreak Warfare–John Mayer *Climb!
  • Summer of ’69–Bryan Adams *Seated Flat!

*These are just suggestions! I’ve varied them in my classes…most of these songs can be used a variety of ways :)

Three Things Thursday

20 May

1. I got a new treadmill at HOME! I’ve wanted one for such a long time…just for those days when the weather is gross or I don’t have time to drive to the gym. I tested it out today with a 7-mile run…its awesome ;)

2. I went to my first Spin class in forEVER at my hometown gym last night. Saw some of my favorite people too…I’m so glad to be home and working out at my favorite gym!

3. I’ve been really, really relaxed (i.e. lazy) this week…minus hitting the gym, appointments, doing fun things and stopping at Starbucks for iced coffee. Ha. I guess my excuse is I’m living it up before I start working???

Adventures of the Week ;)

10 May

Wow the past week or so has been pretty busy. Wednesday was the last day of classes, so Thursday I decided to have some fun :) After I went to the gym for a nice run, the boy and I drove out on the Blue Ridge Parkway to visit an awesome winery. I’ve been there before, but unfortunately wasn’t 21, so I couldn’t do a wine tasting. So I was pumped this time around…I love this winery…their wine is amazing. The lady who did our wine tasting was ahem, very generous with the sampling…needless to say I was sufficiently tipsy at the end of that. Ha ha. Then we took a short tour of the winery, which is really cool. I think Thursday was by far the prettiest day I’ve seen this year, so we drove on the Parkway for a while and stopped at different overlooks to see the gorgeous mountains. I will say this part of the state is so pretty in the summer :)

Friday, I spent the day studying for my 7:45am Saturday exam and took a gym break in the afternoon. I studied until way too late Friday night and got maybe 5 hours of sleep before I had to take my exam. So glad that’s over with! I had plans to go to Hot Yoga on Saturday morning after my exam, so I stopped at Starbucks for coffee to kill some time before I went to the studio. It was a perfect day for yoga…I’ve had a pretty intense workout week, so it was nice to stretch and sweat out toxins. Saturday afternoon, we decided to hike to a local waterfall…its so pretty. I went once my freshman year of college during the Fall, so it was nice to go back in late Spring and see how pretty it is :) It was an awesome 4-mile hike, and we took our time and just enjoyed the day. Its almost like I’m on vacation…even though I still have one more exam to go!

Sunday we stayed in and I cleaned up and did laundry…the necessities. I guess not every day can be a vacation day ;) I got in a nice 7-miler, especially since the weather was SO great yesterday. Then, we spent the evening watching movies. And I was avoiding studying, of course.

Today, well, I had plans to “study” for my essay exam tomorrow morning at 7:45m…what is up with my exams being so early?! I haven’t gotten around to studying…yet. But I was being domestic and made a healthy (cake mix + egg whites + applesauce) cake for the boy…and cleaned the kitchen…and now I am about to go to the gym. Nothing like procrastinating. Oh and did I mention One Tree Hill comes on tonight??? Studying looks like a no-go. Kidding. I do need to at least review the material…just severely lacking motivation nowadays…especially since I graduate in FOUR days ;)

Back in action

26 Apr

After the craziness of last week, I finally feel (mostly) better. I think a lot of feeling better is being reassured that there’s nothing seriously wrong! I went to the doctor on Friday morning after another long sleepless night…I just couldn’t breathe Thursday night, especially when lying down. So I sat up on the couch all night, and actually wasn’t even tired. I finally got tired around 7am, and dozed off for a few minutes…unfortunately, I was going to the doctor at 8am so I didn’t get much sleep. I sat in the doctor’s office forever, and finally got called back. After they reviewed my symptoms and got the medical report from my Wednesday morning trip to the ER, my family doctor said he did not see how the ER doctor could have made such a diagnosis without doing a particular test (having to do with the lungs). Long story short, someone was wrong, and let’s just say it probably was not my family doctor….so my doctor suggested doing an Echocardiogram just to make sure it was nothing serious…he was almost certain it was just an inflamed chest wall. Which I still don’t know how that happened, but anyways….at least its not serious! So the Echocardiogram showed nothing wrong, which was a relief. I think I instantly felt a little better. So basically I was given extra-strength Aleve and that’s about it. But I really am feeling better, so I’m glad :)

I took it easy over the weekend. Friday, after my long day of doctor’s appointments, I was exhausted from not getting sleep the night before. I fell asleep on the couch for about 4 hours, then after dinner fell asleep again. And slept really good that night. So I felt pretty awesome Saturday morning….haha. Then, Saturday was verrrry busy, so I didn’t have time to miss running….because yes, I’ve missed my workouts A LOT. I ended up buying my graduation dress Saturday night plus some gorgeous shoes ;)

Sunday, after running errands with my mom and working on projects for classes, I begged my mom to let me run…ha ha ha. She didn’t care as long as I felt like it…I should’ve known that. The only person who didn’t want me to run was the boy…I think he was terrified I was going to feel bad again. But running actually felt good, and I totally ran at my normal pace. It was nice to break a sweat for the first time in a few days!

I drove back to the ‘Burg today for my last FULL week of classes…we have 3 days next week, too, but those are filled with last-minute exams that my professors crammed in the schedule, so it seems like next week will be my “finals” week. Ha. Its nice to know that college is almost over…I didn’t even dread the 5-hour drive back to school today…because I know its almost over and I’ll be out of here soon ;)

So I’m about to go attempt a Spinning class at my gym near campus…I tried it once before and felt like it was not a good workout at all, but I’m giving it another shot. Plus I don’t need to overexert myself anyways…trying to ease back into my workouts without making myself worse!

Where did the weekend go?

18 Apr

Yes, I had a long(er) weekend…no classes on Friday. Yet it still seems like its gone by awfully fast! Guess that happens when you have things to get done in the two weeks before classes end ;) After the 3.2 mile run on Friday, I contemplated going to Body Pump later in the day…but quickly decided against it when I realized I was exhausted. I ran some errands, finally bought The Hangover…yes I’m obsessed with that movie…and Marley & Me, which makes me cry every time! I actually went out three separate times on Friday…good thing everything is nearby my townhouse! Avoiding schoolwork as much as I could, I watched The Hangover on Friday night…alone…and I laughed out loud as much as I would if I was watching it with other people. haha. Life’s too short to not laugh :)

Saturday, I wasted more time avoiding schoolwork…see a trend here? Then I went for a 5-mile run, napped for two hours (that NEVER happens…I was obviously tired), cooked dinner and cleaned the kitchen. I spent the evening actually doing some work (surprising I know!) with the windows open and a cool breeze coming in the room. Lovely. I lasted about an hour before reading blogs and checking Facebook. Oops.

Today I slept in until 10…which is totally surprising for me…I usually have trouble sleeping past 8:30. I got up and made myself do some more work…then I had enough and went for a 7-mile run. I just cannot sit still and do schoolwork all day. Oh well…with that 7-miler, my weekly mileage is up to 35 miles…funny, I’m not even really training for anything right now…I’ve just been in a running mood lately instead of doing other workouts. I’m not complaining ;)

I wasted more time by going grocery shopping…easily my favorite part of the weekend. I’m one of those people…love buying fresh produce and meal ideas start popping into my mind before I leave the store. Ahh…I should just not go to law school and be a chef instead….ha ha I kid. But at least there’s a back-up plan just in case…ha.

Now I have clearly avoided schoolwork enough this weekend and I’m down to the wire to get things done…that’s how it usually is. I’m a professional procrastinator…but it works out for me. Plus, there’s really only two weeks left of my college career, so I think I can work hard for a little while longer…

Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend…free from procrastination…unlike mine ;)

Busy weekend!

11 Apr

This has probably been one of the busiest weekends I’ve had in the ‘Burg this semester! Friday morning, I went to classes and to the gym to get in a workout before Relay for Life that evening. My family got into town in the late afternoon, and we set up our campsite at Relay…it turned out so cute! My aunt and cousin came up with a cute theme and everyone contributed cute decorations, plus we sold ovarian/breast cancer bracelets and baked goods….which went over well. We did so good, and I’m so proud of my family pulling together to make this a fun night for my Aunt! Minus the cold weather, it was a lot of fun…and no we didn’t make it the entire night…way too cold!

Saturday, we went out for Brunch and just hung out for a while…the weather was gorgeous! Finally, around 2, my aunt, my cousin and his wife left to go home, but my parents stayed through today…so us three drove out on the Blue Ridge Parkway and ended up at a winery to do some wine tasting ;) That was so fun…first time I was able to actually TASTE the wine at a vineyard…last time we visited one up here, I was underage…so I had to sit back while everyone else enjoyed it. Not this time! We ended up buying a few bottles, and then drove on the Parkway some more…the mountains are so pretty this time of year. We were all sooo tired from the night before at Relay, so we had dinner at Panera and called it a night. Oh, I also FINALLY got my cap and gown…graduation is so soon!

I’ve really gotten in a routine of working out every day…it just works for me. I never feel like I’m overtraining or anything, so unless I get to that point, I like my daily workouts. Unfortunately, yesterday was just so busy that I didn’t have time to get a workout in…and I tried to not worry about it. But I still like to break a sweat every day…oh well. This morning, I woke up and went for a 5.6 mile run…I didn’t do a really long run like I usually do on Sundays, because I knew my parents would be waiting on me and they had to go back home today. After running, I got ready and we went out to a cute, local restaurant…they had Greek and Italian food….yum. I love Greek food….in fact, I had a Greek salad for lunch. So good. Plus leftover salad for dinner! ha ha… After my parents left, I decided to go to Hot Yoga…its been two weeks since I went last, and I felt like I could use a good stretch after running over 30 miles this week. Its been a while since I’ve done over 30/week…I definitely gravitated towards only running this week rather than including crosstraining…which is probably NOT a good thing. Crosstraining is a good thing to include in your workout schedule! :)

So, finally the weekend has slowed down…and this upcoming week is going to be soooo slack, so I need to enjoy it while I can! haha…4 day week minus my 9:30am class on Tues/Thurs…not a bad week at all ;) I hope everyone had a great weekend :)

A good kind of pain

26 Mar

Oh the irony…how is pain ever good? Well the kind of pain that is muscle soreness never seems to be a bad thing! Let’s see:

Sunday–Half Marathon

Monday–rest day + yoga to stretch after the Half

Tuesday–6 mile interval run

Wednesday–5 mile hill run outside…in perfect weather :)

Thursday–impromptu Bootcamp workout in Personal Training class + one hour elliptical intervals…serious workout day

Friday–BodyPump + super-speedy 5k + fitness assessment project work (aka death–wayyy too many pushups/situps)

…all of that has left me incredibly sore tonight. In a good way of course :)

I’ve had a great workout week even after running a half marathon on Sunday. It’s amazing how being so active makes recovery time so quick! Going out for a 13.1 mile run is just a workout for the books nowadays…so maybe I should look into a new challenge…a marathon? I think so ;) I am registered for the NYC Marathon lottery…and I think April 7th is the announcement day. We shall see! If I don’t get to run NYC, I’m eyeing the OBX Marathon…close to my home, plus its my favorite, favorite place in the entire world. I practically grew up there…so it would be a super-fun marathon :) Both of these are in November…which means I would be doing my longest runs during the first two months of law school…scary! I know I’m going to be busy with school…but I never sacrifice a good workout…and I never will. Law school is not going to change that…haha. I’m pretty stubborn ;)

I know there’s sooo much I need to be doing right now but quite honestly I’m being lazy and enjoying it…haha. I’ve had an extremely busy week and the rest of my time in college is going to be busybusybusy, so I’m laying low tonight. Graduation in 48 days! ;)

Adding the Miles

10 Mar

So I wanted to get in a double digit run sometime this week over Spring Break, but I was slowly running out of time to squeeze one in! Since I’ll be gone Thursday & Friday to Charlotte, NC to visit a law school, that left me with today and Saturday…and Saturday is my 21st birthday! I had no intentions going into my run…the weather was sooo perfect, 70 degrees and no wind…and I just wanted to enjoy it. But as I started running, I felt really good and decided I would aim for a double digit run. Its a challenge to measure the exact distance since my Nike+ chip isn’t working (and its a brand new replacement!), so I guesstimated most of the time. I have measured out 7 miles out and back, so I just ran farther and hoped it would add enough mileage! Well, I checked mapmyrun.com when I got back and I actually did 11 miles! Unfortunately, today’s run wasn’t as lovely as my eleven-miler two weeks ago. But I got in the miles, so that’s all that matters. I probably won’t do another double-digit run before the half marathon on March 21st…I’ll keep my runs under 8 miles most likely.

I’ve been helping cook dinner since I’ve been home this week, and tonight I’m actually getting my parents to eat tofu. My mom doesn’t mind it, but I don’t think my dad is a huge fan of it…haha. I made healthy Spinach-Tofu Lasagna, so I doubt he will even know there’s tofu in it! ;) I still need to pack for the trip to Charlotte, because we’re leaving early tomorrow…gotta get in all the shopping time I can while I’m there! Haha, of course I would think of shopping…even though that’s obviously not the reason we’re making the trip there. I was accepted at the law school in Charlotte, and they do tours and info sessions on Fridays only, so this was the only time I am able to go. I know for a fact that I love Charlotte…so hopefully I’ll like the law school as well!

Well I guess I better start packing…you can never take too many clothes when you travel! ;)
